Shirley Ann Norman Surratt passed away on April 23, 2019 at the age of 90.
She was born in Yadkin County, NC on February 2, 1929, to the late James Alvis Norman and Mable Davis Norman. Shirley graduated from East Bend High School in 1947, and thereafter from King’s Business College in Greensboro, NC. She worked in the Wayne Community College Dean of Students Office until she retired in 1991. She was a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church, the J. Paul Edwards Sunday School Class and the Unity circle.
In accordance with our Mother’s wishes, a private memorial service will be held.
Shirley is survived by her daughter, Pamela Surratt Gleason, her son, Joseph Surratt, III and Sandra Reeves; grandchildren Jackie Edwards, Juliana Surratt and Jeremy Surratt; great grandchildren Bethany Jones, Lucas Edwards, Jackson Edwards, Dillon Lancaster; and her sister, Eloise Rabb of Clemmons, NC. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband of 55 years, Joseph Surratt, Jr., her son, Gregory Surratt, her grandson, Joseph Surratt, IV and her sister, Nancy Norman.
Shirley unconditionally loved her family, her close friends and her church, music, art and the beauty of nature. She enjoyed helping others, playing the piano for nursing home residents, creating watercolor and oil paintings, cooking her famous butternut pound cakes for friends and always doing the small things that brought joy and comfort to others. Because she radiated such positive, loving, caring energy, she had a profound, enduring effect on the lives of her family, friends and many others, including the students at WCC.
The family would like to express our heartfelt thanks to Jewel Wheeler, Louise Jinnette, George Griffith and Carol McDuffie for their faithful friendship and loving attention to our Mother over the past few years.
