Shirley (Thornton) Powell

Shirley Thornton Powell, age 88, passed away Sunday evening at her home. Born in Wayne County, she was the daughter of the late James Foster Thornton and Ioda Anderson Thornton and wife of the late O’Max Gardner Powell. She was also preceded in death by a son, Donnie Powell, a grandson, Bailey Lynch and a brother, James Thornton. Shirley volunteered her time at Wayne Memorial Hospital for 23 years.

A service to celebrate her life will be held on Wednesday at 6:00 pm at Shumate-Faulk Funeral Home with Rev. Jim Radford officiating. The family will greet friends immediately following the service at the funeral home.

Mrs. Powell is survived by her children, Larry Powell, Bonnie Powell, Sabrina Mitchell and husband, Andy, Mike Powell, Jay Powell and wife, Kim, Beverly Bragg and Kimberly Powell; two brothers, Nelson Thornton and wife, Reba, and George Thornton; a sister in law, Georgia Thornton; thirteen grandchildren and twenty great grandchildren.
