Shelby Jean Wolfe Powell, 82, of Mt. Olive, passed away on Saturday at Kitty Askins Hospice Center. Born in Wayne County, she was the daughter of the late George E. Wolfe and the late Nellie Herring Wolfe and wife of the late James “Jimmy” Powell. She was also preceded in death by a brother, Thomas Wolfe. Mrs. Powell was a former member of the Mount Olive Lions Auxiliary and the Wayne Shrine Club Shrinettes. She attended Rones Chapel United Methodist Church.
A graveside service will be held Monday at 2:00 pm at Maplewood Cemetery in Mt. Olive with Rev. Johnny Strickland and Pastor Valerie Hardison officiating. Family members will greet friends at the graveside and at other times at Shelby’s home.
Shelby is survived by her sons, Martin & Mary Anne Powell, Nelson Powell & special friend, Lisa Wells, and Johnny Max & Kim Powell; a sister, Lois W. Price; five grandchildren, Jessica and Chris Outlaw, Byron Powell, Evan Powell, Trey Powell and Maggie Powell; and two great grandchildren, Caden Outlaw and Cameron “Cam-Cam” Outlaw; and two step grandchildren, Marlana Olomos and Terri Gail Best.
Shelby requested no flowers and that memorial gifts be directed to the Sudan Shriners Hospital, P.O. Box 1525, Ranson, WV 25438; or to the Sudan Shriners Mini Rigs, 324 Westbrook Church Road, Mt. Olive, NC 28365-7576
