Robert "Bob" Clyde McKay

Robert "Bob" McKay Obituary


Robert "Bob" Clyde McKay, age 84, passed away Wednesday at Wake Medical Center in Raleigh. Born in Iowa City, IA, he was the son of the late William and Iona Schott McKay. 


He was a retired veteran of the United States Air Force, then later worked at Cherry Point Naval Air Station on contracts with various companies such as Boeing and McDonnell Douglass, which included the Harrier B-Program retrofitting the Harriers for our U.S. pilots. He had a degree in Industrial Management. He later owned and operated both Bob's Mobile Electronics Repair, working on aircraft and yachts along NC's coast, and was owner and captain of a commercial shrimp boat for 17 years.  
He was a member of the American Legion Post 11, Secretary of the Grantham Airport Club, a member of the Experimental Aircraft Association. He also belonged to The International Society of Certified Electronics Technicians, the Popular Rotorcraft Association, The US Federal Communications Commission and was a General Radiotelephone Licensed Operator, and a Platinum member of the Mountain Area Gem and Mineral Association. 

He was also an avid flyer of ultralights and gyrocopters, which took him to OshKosh Wisconsin occasionally. He was an active participant with the Boy Scouts of America. Throughout his life he enjoyed photography, mining and lapidary, playing tennis, boating, fishing, hunting, trapping, camping and playing cards for the house in Las Vegas Casinos. Bob also loved to travel and managed to travel to every state in the US, living in many, and travelling to several countries. The countries he lived in throughout his life included Morocco, The Ivory Coast of Africa, Korea, Japan, Thailand, Vietnam, Canada, Greenland where he was Knighted by the  Arctic Order, Knights of the Blue Nose, of Thule Greenland (Denmark).   
He was extremely adventurous but he mostly enjoyed meeting and listening to strangers who often became friends. 

Bob is survived by his wife of 61 years, Lucille Presseau McKay of Canada, sons, Robert Scott McKay and Michael Patrick McKay; daughters Michelle Patricia McKay and Angela Michelle McKay; sister Carol McKay Reed; grandchildren, Alicia Barnett, Shanea Barnett, William McKay, Zander McKay and Aiva Nolan; great grandchildren, Annabelle Barnett, Wells Soper, Magdaline Kelley and Elijah Love. 


Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Helen Janet McKay, son, Steven Andrew McKay and his brother, Dean McKay.
