Richard Munson was born in Washington, ME to James & Eliza Hayward Munson, one of 4 children including Reginald, Elvin, & Myrna. Employed as a machine operator with a shoe manufacturer, he also worked in a foundry creating axes &, even later, Richard was employed with a fish cannery.
Upon his retirement, he relocated to Wayne County, NC and became a member of Emmaus Baptist Church…the people there became his extended family. None were closer than his friendship with Tim Harrington, who was like a brother to Richard, and Ernestine Best. He tried to arrive early for church services and enjoyed the times when he supplied the main course for church dinners.
Much could be said regarding Richard’s care for his neighbors. He was always available to give a ride to the store, doctor’s appointment, and could often be found preparing meals to share in the community.
His death on April 14, 2025, at UNC Wayne Hospital came after a period of declining health. A Celebration of Life Service for Richard will be held Saturday, April 19th at 4pm at Emmaus Baptist Church with Rev. Jim Willoughby officiating.
He is also survived by 3 children, Richard Munson, Jr., Suzette Frances, & Jodi Munson; 5 grandchildren & 2 great grandchildren.
