Rex Harrol Hartzog

December 4, 1939 ~ July 23, 2023 (age 83) 83 Years Old


Rex Harrol Hartzog, 83, of Goldsboro passed away on Sunday at Helping Hands Assisted Living.  He is the son of the late James Aubrey Hartzog and the late Mary Emma Pridgen and was married to the late Lelia Marie Hartzog for 63 years. Mr. Hartzog joined the United States Air Force at 17 years old and retired after 20 years served. He went on to work in a number of different jobs always based on service to others: Administrator of the NC Wesleyan College branch at Seymour Johnson AFB; Veterans representative with the NC Employment Security Commission; as a law enforcement officer at a number of different local municipalities before retiring a second time from the State of NC Probation and Parole Division. He was a member of the American Legion, the Disabled American Veterans, and the Fraternal Order of Police.  He volunteered with the Mar Mac Volunteer Fire Department and the American Red Cross.

Rex Hartzog was a kind and generous man, who would give his all to help those in need. He lived his life full of love for his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren, ensuring that each were spoiled to the best of his abilities.

A graveside service to celebrate his life will be held at Wayne Memorial Park on Friday, July 28th at 11:00 am. The family will receive friends following the service at the graveside.

Rex is survived by his sons; Dennis Hartzog and wife, Kimberly of Goldsboro, Aubrey “AJ” Hartzog and wife, Heather of Winterville NC; sisters; Kathryn Lee of Hamilton, GA and Patricia Plenk of Reno, NV; grandchildren, Kelly Parks, Jessica Goldman, Bergen Hartzog, Cooper Hartzog, Peyton Hartzog, Kinsley Grace Hartzog, Cheyenne Hartzog, Nevaeh Smith, Taylor Waters and Luke Waters; great grandchildren, Cameron Parks, Jillian Goldman, and Jenny Goldman.

In addition to his wife, Rex is preceded in death by a son, Keith Hartzog and wife, Phyllis; a brother, Billy James Hartzog and wife, Mary Tom; and sisters, Betty Hartzog and Carolyn Inez Simmons and husband, Rufus.

The family would like to thank Helping Hands Assisted Living and Kitty Askins Hospice Center for their loving care of Mr. Rex while he was with them.
