Melvin Eugene “Gene” Witherington, age 78, passed away Sunday at Kitty Askins Hospice Center. Born in Wayne County, he was the son of the late Lloyd Woodrow Witherington and the late Lossie Belle Holloman Witherington. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Ray Witherington and a grandson, Joshua Allen McIntosh. Gene was retired from Georgia-Pacific in Dudley.
A service to celebrate Gene’s life will be held by the graveside on Wednesday at 1:00 pm at the Holloman-Anderson Family Cemetery with Rev. Frank Harrison officiating. The family will greet friends Tuesday evening from 6:00 until 8:00 pm at Shumate-Faulk Funeral Home and at other times at the home of his daughter, Rhonda McIntosh.
Gene is survived by his children, Rhonda McIntosh and her husband, John, Brian Witherington and Phillip Witherington; his brothers, Charles Witherington and his wife, Carolyn and Linwood Witherington and his wife, Debbie; a sister, Wanda Williford and her husband, David; and a grandson, Andrew Witherington.
