Melba Jean (Sasser) Sykes

Melba Jean Sasser Sykes passed away Tuesday morning, July 7, 2026 at the SECU Hospice House in Smithfield. Born in Wayne County, she was the daughter of the late Harvey Sasser and Sudie Toler Sasser and wife of the late Charles Douglas Sykes.

A service to celebrate the life of Melba will be  held on Saturday, July 11, 2026 at 10:00 am at Shumate-Faulk Funeral Home with Rev. Jim Willoughby officiating. The family will greet friends immediately following the service at the funeral home. Burial will follow in Wayne Memorial Park.

Melba is survived by her children, Richard (Joni) Lancaster and Angie (David) Lewis; her grandchildren, Sara Lewis Hood, Marc Lewis, Zach Lancaster and Madi Lancaster Albert; along with three great grandchildren, Chandler, Callum and Weston.
