Luther Hartley Obituary

Luther Adell Hartley, age 92, passed away on Monday, November 25th at his residence. Born in Johnston County, he was the son of the late Leroy and Lettie Turnage Hartley and husband of the late Tempie Kearney Hartley. He was also preceded in death by his brothers, Leo Hartley, Carl Hartley and Ray Hartley, along with his sister, Aileen Holloman. He was a member of the Anchored In Christ Church and was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather.

Mr. Hartley was a Veteran of the U.S. Air Force having served during the Korean Conflict as a radio operator and received the Good Conduct Medal. He then served in the Air Force Reserves. He worked with Kemp Furniture for 33 years and upon retirement he attended Wayne Community College where he learned small engine repair. He used this new knowledge to help others and continue his “jack of all trades” status.

A service to celebrate Mr. Hartley’s life will be held on Tuesday, November 26th at 7:00pm at Shumate-Faulk Funeral Home with Rev. Wright Shumate and Rev. Kenneth Evans officiating. The family will greet friends immediately following the service at the funeral home. A committal service will be held on Wednesday, November 27th at 10:00am at Wayne Memorial Park.

Mr. Hartley is survived by his son, Ronnie Hartley and wife, Yvonne; his daughter, Rhonda Hartley Shumate and her husband, Wright; his grandchildren, Ashley Stroud and her husband, Chris, Jonathan Hartley and wife, Sarah, and Amber Shumate; along with five great grandchildren, Melody Stroud, Madelyn Stroud, Macy Stroud, Gideon Hartley and Micah Hartley.
