John Wesley Southerland, age 72, of Mt. Olive, passed away at his residence on Tuesday, June 10th. Born in Wayne County, he was the son of the late Edward Alonza Southerland, Sr. and Dorothy Rae Southerland. He was also preceded in death by sister, Ann Southerland Jones and husband Neil, sister-in-law, Jackie Bourgeois Southerland.
Johnny was a graduate of Southern Wayne High School and attended East Carolina University. He was a Chief Galley Chef on oil rigs in the Gulf of Mexico and numerous steak restaurants. He was a gentle and kind man, along with being smart and funny. He enjoyed the times spent working with his brother, E.A., in his construction business. In retirement Johnny loved caring for our sister Ann and our mother before they passed.
A service to celebrate John's life will be held on Saturday, June 28, 2025 at Mt. Olive Train Depot and Events Center at 2:00 P.M.
Johnny is survived by his brothers, E.A Southerland and spouse Kay and Bill Southerland. He is also survived by his nephews, Jonathan Jones and wife Christy, Wesley Southerland and nieces, Marisa Jaroszewski and husband Jay, Jessica Walker, and husband Johnnie along with multiple great nephews and nieces.
