Jesse Wayne Murray

Jesse Wayne Murray, age 85, passed away Friday, January 30, 2026 at the home of his son. Born in Wayne County, he was the son of the late Claude W. Murray and Lila Mae Strickland Murray and brother of the late Thomas Murray. Jesse attended Wayne’s Chapel Church of God of Prophecy. He built many houses around Wayne County and Norfolk, Virginia. He loved gospel music and enjoyed time spent playing at church and other venues.

A service to celebrate Jesse’s life will be held on Saturday, February 14, 2026 at 12:30 pm at Wayne’s Chapel Church with Rev. Ralph Parker officiating. Burial will follow in Willowdale Cemetery. The family will greet friends at the church one hour prior to the service.

Jesse is survived by his sons, Jimmy Wayne Murray and his wife, Janet, Jesse Lee Murray and his fiancée, Julie Evans; and his daughter, Kathy Jean Waters and her husband, Kent; his step son, Scott Shoemake; his step daughter, Chrystal Barnett;  two sisters, Rosa Lamm and Margaret Tyndall; eight grandchildren; thirteen great grandchildren and one great great grandchild.
