James Arthur Flowers

James Arthur Flowers, age 84, passed away on Sunday at his residence. Born in Jackson, NC, he was the son of the late Venable Franklin Flowers and the late Sarah Willie Wheeler Flowers and husband of the late Lona Lee Spry Flowers. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Alvin Ray Flowers and two sisters, Shirley Glover Richardson and Marjorie Dale Dennis.

Mr. Flowers was a member of the Wendell Baptist Church and attended the Mount Olive Free Will Baptist Church. He was retired from the US Air Force after 20 years of service as a firefighter and continuing in the civil service with 20 more years as a fireman with Seymour Johnson Air Force Base for a total of 40 years in the fire service. He was a member of the International Association of Arson Investigators. He served tours in Texas, England, California, Korea, Spain and North Carolina. He was member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post #2615 and the American Legion, Post #11.

A service to celebrate his life will be held by the graveside at Wayne Memorial Park with Military and Fire Service Honors on Thursday at 2:00 pm. Family members will greet friends one hour prior to the service at Shumate-Faulk Funeral Home.

Mr. Flowers is survived by his daughter, Laura Lee Flowers Bevell and her husband, Dale Bevell; a sister, Betsy “Betty” Wheeler Ibison; and two grandsons, Ryan Matthew Bevell and Joshua Alan Bevell.

In lieu of flowers the family suggests that memorial gifts be directed to the Community Home Health and Hospice Care, 2309 Wayne Memorial Drive, Goldsboro, NC 27534; the American Legion Post #11, 2973 US Hwy. 117, Dudley, NC 28333; or to the charity of your choice.
