Hilda Jones Obituary

Hilda Brown Jones, age 85, joined her beloved husband Donald in Heaven on Friday, December 29, 2023. She passed peacefully, surrounded by her loving family.

A celebration of her life will be held Wednesday, January 3, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. at Trinity Missionary Baptist Church in Goldsboro, where she was a member for over 30 years. Pastor Dave Fishman and Pastor Jack Sauls will officiate. Burial will follow in Wayne Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, January 2, 2024 at Shumate-Faulk Funeral Home in Goldsboro.

Mrs. Jones was born in Johnston County on October 7, 1938. She was preceded in death by her parents, Louis and Bettie Raynor Ezzell and Needham Brown.  She was married to the late Donald Coleman Jones. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sisters Everleene Combs, Doris Denning and Ruby Jackson and by her brothers, Needham Brown Jr. and Mack Brown.

Left to cherish her memory are daughters, Diane Hagar and Lisa Tyree and husband Curtis; son Keith Jones and wife Diane; brother Bill Brown and wife Lorraine; sister Teresa McLawhorn;  grandchildren Chris Mooney and wife Ashley, Kelly Edwards and husband Ralph, Caleb Tyree, McKenzie Tyree, Bobby Colie, and Robert Colie and wife Delilah; great-grandchildren Skyler King and friend Haley Maynor, Dylan Mitchell, Madysen Edwards, Maddox Edwards, Will Holland, Jada Davenport, Tyler Colie, and Aydan Colie; and great-great grandchild Waylon King. Additionally, she is survived by very special friends Jack and Linda Sauls.

Hilda was a much loved sister, mother, grandmother and friend, and will be deeply missed by all who loved her. She was patient, kind, selfless, loyal, and loving, and even as her illness robbed her of her most precious memories, it could not steal those qualities that made her the beautiful person she was.

She loved Tarheel basketball, shopping, babies,  animals, chocolate, her church, and Southern gospel music, but she loved her family above all else. She was an exceptional mother and grandmother and was present for nearly every event in her grandchildren’s lives - countless birthday parties, school plays, concerts, ball games, and graduations. She was blessed to retire early after more than 20 years at R.G. Barry and spent much of the next thirty years doing what she loved - caring for grandkids. She loved and spoiled them, played with them, sang with them, taught them, and gave the best back scratches. She made marks on their Iives that can never be erased. She also helped care for a special granddog, Hunter, taking him for walks and treating him to cookies and bacon. She doted on her own special fur babies, her cats, Junior and Smokey.  She spent many years as the nursery director at her church, a job she put her heart into and took much pride in.

The Jones family would like to express their gratitude and appreciation to the staff of both Gentiva Hospice and Goldsboro Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center for the care and comfort given to Mrs. Jones and the family during a difficult time. A special thank you to a lifelong family friend, Karen Collier Waller, for all the love, care and support she’s provided, especially the last several months.
