David Shelton Obituary

David Ross Shelton

May 12, 1944 – August 26, 2021

David Ross Shelton passed away unexpectedly on August 26 at Wayne Memorial Hospital. Although he had health issues for several months, he had great hope that he would regain his strength and get back to the things he most enjoyed  - working in  his shop, woodworking, hunting, fishing, and spending time with family.

David was the son of Hugh and Sarah (Patsy) Shelton of Speed, growing up on a farm in Edgecombe County. He attended Speed School, then graduated from North Edgecombe High School and Atlantic Christian College.

He is survived by his wife of forty-five years, Claudette Rouse Shelton, son John David Brown and partner David Townsend of Conover, brothers Henry Hugh Shelton and wife Carolyn of Newport, Benjamin Franklin Shelton and wife Susan of Williamston and sister Sarah Shelton Balkcum and husband Jimmy of Cary. Brother-in-law Randy Rouse and wife Elizabeth of Calypso, and Sister-in-law Arwilda Pate of Mount Olive. He was also loved by nieces Jennifer Helderman, Kristen Higgins, Sarah Sproat, Lauren Newman, Gail Knowles, Angie Culbertson, Elanora Rouse, and Sherry Harding as well as nephews Jon Shelton, Jeff Shelton, Mark Shelton and all of their families.

David had a thirty-five year career of teaching high school sciences.  The number of students who were influenced and inspired by his love of science as well as his love for his students is beyond measure. He leaves a legacy that will be long-remembered.  David was a longtime member of First Baptist Church of Mount Olive where he served as a deacon and a trustee, but also where he spent countless hours serving and caring for others.  One of his dearest projects was being a part of the bicycle ministry refurbishing and delivering bicycles for children in need.

A service of remembrance will be held on Tuesday, August 31 at 1pm, 2021 at First Baptist Church of Mount Olive, NC. For the safety of everyone in attendance, the family respectfully asks that masks be worn at all times.  Also in the interest of safety, no receiving will be held.

Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church of Mount Olive, 300 North Chestnut Street, Mount Olive, NC 28365 or Shelton Leadership Center, NC State University, Campus Box 7133, Raleigh, NC 27695-7133   https://sheltonleadership.ncsu.edu/donate/
