Braylen Maurice Newsome, age 16, passed away in the early morning hours of Monday, November 17, 2025 from injuries received in a tragic automobile accident. Braylen is the son of Johnathon Newsome and Jessica Dunn. He was preceded in death by a grandfather, John Oscar Newsome and an uncle, Robert Maurice Dunn. Braylen is a junior at Southern Wayne High School and loved sports and video games.
A service to celebrate his life will be held Monday, November 24, 2025 at 2:00 P.M. in the chapel of Shumate-Faulk Funeral Home with Pastor Richard Toler officiating. Committal services will follow in Wayne Memorial Park. The family will receive friends Monday from 12:45 to 1:45 pm prior to the service at the funeral home.
In addition to his parents, “Big Country” as Braylen was affectionately called by his friends, is survived by his grandparents that raised him, Donald and Joann Mozingo; a grandmother, Tonya McLaurin; a brother, Christian Smith; a sister, Carla Guerrero; several aunts, uncles and cousins, including Justin, Jessica, Devin, Hannah, Chris, Madison, Cayden, Lily, Tytiana and Kaleb.
In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be directed to the Love Memorial Baptist Church, 192 Woodland Church Road, Goldsboro, NC 27530.
