Avis (Rye)Davis of Goldsboro, North Carolina, passed away in the early morning of Wednesday, February 24, surrounded by her family. She was born on April 20, 1941, in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, to the late Howard Vincent Sr. and Bertha (Wonacott) Rye.
She met Freddie, her forever love, while working as a beautician on Kincheloe Air Force Base while Freddie was serving in the Air Force as a barber. They were married on January 24, 1964. They were blessed with two children: a daughter, Penny Jean (Davis) Westover, and a son, Richard Brian Davis.
They moved from Pickford to Gwinn, Michigan, where they lived for nine years before returning to the Sault in 1977. They stayed in the Sault until 1995, when they moved to Goldsboro, North Carolina, to be out of the snow and closer to their children.
Avis enjoyed crafting, caring for her small flower garden, cooking for her family, and working in child care. She was a member of Pineview Baptist Church, the Women’s Missionary Union (WMU), and the Gideon’s Women’s Auxiliary.
Mrs. Davis is survived by her husband, Freddie Brewer Davis; a daughter, Penny (Davis) Westover (Don); a son, Richard Davis (Gail); grandchildren, Chris Carter (Kelly) and Jimmy Ray Carter (Laura); great-grandchildren, Lilly, Shaun, Emmett, Jimmy Ray Jr and Nathan, as well as two sisters, Beverly Waybrant and Bonnie Leach.
A memorial service will be held at Pineview Baptist Church, 3357 North US 117 Highway, Goldsboro, NC 27530, on Saturday, March 6, 2021. Visitation will be from 1:00-2:00, followed by the service at 2:00.
An additional memorial service will be held in Pickford, Michigan, on July 31, 2021. Details will be posted at a later date.
