Betty Mixon Daughtry, age 89, of Goldsboro, passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday surrounded by her family. She was born on April 23, 1936, in Durham, North Carolina, to Anne Simkins Mixon and Henry Walton Mixon, Jr.
Betty graduated from Goldsboro High School in 1954 and was presented at the North Carolina Terpsichorean Club Debutante Ball in 1955. She continued her education at St. Mary’s Junior College, graduating in 1956, and later graduated from UNC Greensboro in 1957.
Guided by a heart for teaching and service, Betty spent over 40 years with Wayne County Public Schools, shaping countless young lives throughout her long and dedicated career.
On June 29, 1957, she married Gerald Blaxton Daughtry. Together, they shared sixty-three wonderful years of marriage filled with devotion, faith, and family.
A faithful member of St. Paul Methodist Church for over 70 years, Betty was deeply involved in her church serving on the altar guild, a member of the Aldersgate Circle, delivering of the Upper Room monthly to shut ins in the community. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, where she served as secretary, as well as the Wayne County Shrine Club Shrinettes, where she served as Chapter President. She was an active member of the NC Association of Educators and Delta Kappa Gamma Society for Women Educators.
Betty loved music, animals, and, above all, spending time with her family. Her warmth, kindness, and gentle spirit were felt by all who knew her.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and her brother, Henry Walton Mixon Jr.
Betty is survived by her daughters, Kay Daughtry of Goldsboro, Peggy Daughtry of Wilmington, and Carol Daughtry Bynum and husband, Arch Bynum, Jr. of Goldsboro; her grandchildren, Elizabeth Bynum, Darden Bynum III, and Helen-Anne Bynum; sister-in-law Rhonda (McDaniel) Mixon; nephews Todd (Alma) Minard and David (Michele) Mixon; niece Kimberly (Todd) Rolfe; and great-nieces and great-nephews Gabriela Minard, Christopher Rolfe, Joshua Rolfe, Samuel Rolfe, Matthew Rolfe, Devin Mixon, and David Mixon.
The family would like to extend heartfelt thanks to the staff of 3HC Hospice for their compassionate support during her final weeks.
