Selva Tart Obituary

Selva J. “Pop” Tart, 96, passed away Saturday at Kitty Askins. He was born in Snow Hill to the late L.V. and Lillie Belle Shirley Tart.

 

During WW2 in 1943, Selva started his long career as a certified pipe welder at the NC Shipbuilding Yard in Wilmington, NC. He also worked at Norfolk Navy Yard in Norfolk, VA and Newport News Navy Yard in Newport News, VA . In the later part of 1949, Selva came to Goldsboro to work for Jenkins Structural Steele then for Dewey Brothers for seven years. In 1957 Selva joined the United Association of Journeymen and Apprentices of the Plumbing and Pipe Fitting Industry of the United States. This opportunity allowed Selva to work in many places through out the east coast on many building and construction jobs, including; Carolina Power & Light, Moncure, NC; Rosemary Textile, Roanoke Rapids, NC; Allied Chemical, Hopewell, VA; Franklin Paper Mill, Franklin, VA; H. F. Lee Power Plant, Goldsboro, NC; E. I. Dupont, Kinston, NC; East Carolina University, Greenville, NC; Texas Gulf, Plymouth, NC; Pope Air Force Base, Fort Bragg, NC; Kelly Springfield Tire, Fayetteville, NC; and finally in 1974 at Calvert Cliffs Nuclear Power Plant, Lusby, MD, where he became disabled and had to retire.

 

Selva was married to the late Mollie Elmore Tart on May 19, 1951 for 63 years liken 9 days when she passed away on May 10, 2014. He was also preceded in death by his brothers, J. C., Ollie, Major and a sister, Clara Bell.

 

Selva is survived by his children, Jean Tart Rea and Randy Goddard of Charlotte, Ann Tart Plumley and husband Rick of Goldsboro, and Don Alan Tart and Karen Jones of Ball Ground, GA; grandchildren, Dana Wadsworth- Strole and husband, Curtis, Clark and Blake Rea; a sister, Audrey Brion of Snow Hill; a brother, David W. Tart, Sr. and wife, Beverly of Hinesville, GA; and several nieces and nephews.

 

Mr. Tart loved preforming with his dobro and lap steel guitars for local audiences. Mr. Tart was a faithful member of Black Jack Grove Free Will Baptist Church as long as his health permitted.

 

A graveside service will be held on Tuesday at 11:00 A.M. at Wayne Memorial Park with Rev. Franklin Lane officiating. The family will receive friends at Shumate-Faulk Funeral Home on Monday evening from 7:00 until 9:00 P.M.
