Dorothy Ellen Sauls of Snow Hill, NC passed away peacefully early Sunday morning, at her home, surrounded by her daughter, Sheila and her brother, Linwood.
Dorothy was born in Greene County, NC and was the daughter of the late Joe Sauls and Laura Smith Sauls Pate of Greene County, NC.
Dorothy was also preceded in death by her husband of 29 years until his accidental death at Seymour Johnson Air Force Base, James Irvin Heath. She was also preceded in death by her brother, Frank Sauls and sisters, Lillie S. Smith and JoAnn S. Parrish.
She is survived by her daughter, Sheila H. Smith of Goldsboro; brothers, Linwood A. Sauls and wife, Carolyn B. Sauls of Goldsboro; James E. Sauls and wife, Barbara Sauls of Wilson; sister, Judy S. Weaver and husband, W.C. Weaver of Rocky Mount. Special nieces and nephews.
Also survived by grandsons, Neil Smith, Blake Smith, and Heath Smith, all of the Saulston community. Also 5 great granddaughters, and 1 great grandson.
Dorothy lived in Biloxi, Mississippi with her husband, James I. Heath, when he was in the United States Air Force. They returned to Greene County, to live out their lives.
As a homemaker, she found great joy in having an immaculate home and was a very good cook. She enjoyed keeping her yard looking very nice. Dorothy did work in the Greene County School System for 9 years. A Christian woman, she loved watching many Christian television programs. She was an avid reader and loved country music. As a child, she attended Shine School and Snow Hill School.
Dorothy was an animal lover. She cherished her pitt bull, Nub, who lived for 10 years. Her gray african parrott, Dutch, is still living at 38 years old. The last 3 years of her life, she loved her daughters, Yorkies- Earlee, Memnet & Kni-Klaus’. Memnet, she called her “little girl”.
Sheila became her mother’s caretaker the last three years of her life. At the very end of Dorothy’s life, her brother, Linwood A. Sauls, helped Sheila care for her medically until she passed away. Also great helpers were Linwood’s wife, Carolyn B. Sauls and Dorothy’s sister, Judy Weaver, assisting with other things, such as dealing with meals and pharmacy needs.
Sheila would like to thank Community Hospice of Lenior County and their director, Jessica Patton and social worker, Crystal Pollard, whom were very nice.
The most wonderful and extremely caring Caretakers were Leslee Johnson, RN; Heather Houston, CNA; Angie Lacross, RN. They will be loved for the care and love they gave Dorothy.
Also, at Vidant Hospital, Dr. Thiess and Dr. Chako. She received excellent treatment from them.
She loved her community, especially her neighbors who cared for her throughout the years
Per Mrs. Heath’s request, there will be no visitation at the funeral home except immediate family. The graveside service will be held Friday, December 20, 2019 at 2:00 pm at Snow Hill Cemetery.
