Ashley (Duck) Doane Gainey, 81, of Goldsboro, passed away at Kitty Askins August 19, 2019, surrounded by his family. Duck was born in Wayne County to the late Walter Calvin Gainey and the late Gladys Futrell Gainey. He graduated from Brogden High School in Dudley in 1956 and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics from Guilford College. Duck pursued post baccalaureate studies at East Carolina University where he met and married Melisia Gray Wallace in July of 1967.
He taught for Wayne County Public Schools and State DOT before opening Sandhill Gas & Supply, Inc., with his late brother Walter “Bob” Gainey. He served his community in many ways including volunteering with the Mar Mac Fire Department.
Duck is survived by his wife, Melisia; three children, Shelley West (Maris), Raiford Gainey, and Thomas Gainey (Lisa); three grandchildren, Gabriel, Samuel, and Grace West; his sister, Judy Cates, as well as his sisters-in-law, Joyce Gainey, Betty Gainey, Sylvia Wallace, Pattie Queen, and Lillian Wallace; one brother-in-law, Earl Queen; numerous close nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, and cousins including Norwood Gainey, Jr., and family and close friends Kenneth and Brenda Cox.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Gladys Gainey; his brothers, Walter “Bob,” James “Jim,” Dale “Jack,” and his younger sister, Marilyn, along with his sister-in-law, Elizabeth “Lib” Gainey, and brothers-in-law, Forrest Cates, Conrad Ryden, Delmar Wallace, Jr., Henry Wallace, and Rolphe Wallace.
The memorial service, being handled by Shumate-Faulk Funeral Home, will be held Wednesday, August 21, 2019, at Providence United Methodist Church at 6:00 pm, followed by a visitation in the church Fellowship Hall. Memorials may be designated to the bus fund of Providence United Methodist Church.
